New London County wildlife control Tip of the Month:
Why it is not safe to handle skunks with bare hands?
When it comes to handling wild animals including skunks, care must be taken to not handle them with bare hands. Skunks in particular should never be handled with bare hands. Given the fact they are not easy to handle in the first place, it makes sense to take as many precautions as possible when handling them. When you approach a skunk, it will most probably emit a smelly spray to keep you at bay.
Dangerous to touch
It is extremely dangerous to touch a skunk with bare hands. In fact, it is dangerous being around skunks as they not only pose a danger of spraying you but they are also carriers of a number of diseases. Skunks are known to carry the dangerous rabies virus and so should be handled very carefully.
Call in the professionals
A skunk that is rabid will act in a fearless manner. Healthy skunks on the other hand are more circumspect about how they act around humans. It is therefore a good idea to avoid them at all costs and if they show no fear of humans, then you need to be extra careful. Skunks on your property should be kept at an arm's length and in fact, rather than try to handle them on your own, it makes more sense to call in a professional to help get rid of them.
Beware of bites
When you try to handle a skunk, there is a strong chance that it will bite you. When it bites you, then you risk having the rabies virus transmitted to your person and this can prove to be very dangerous for you. In addition, skunks also carry diseases such as leptospirosis and Baylisascaris columnaris. That's not all, because they also have fleas and ticks and mites that can cause several health issues.
Live trapping
When there are several skunks in your property, you may want to use live trapping to get rid of them. However, you need to be careful that you do not end up being sprayed by the skunk – even if it is in a cage. Be sure to not only cover your hands in rubber gloves but also wear protective clothing when handling the skunk. Even when you are handling a skunk that is trapped in a cage, you need to take extra precautions. As mentioned, be sure to cover your hands in rubber gloves (thick) and also do not try to hold the cage by its rungs that are within reach of the skunk. It is also vitally important that you do not allow your skin to come into contact with the skunk because it could get aggressive and try and bite you.
